The sun was shining in Funchal on April 15th, but the real heat was generated inside the Digital Transformation Summit, where industry leaders gathered to tackle one of the most pressing puzzles of our time: How do we merge digital evolution with environmental responsibility?

This question wasn’t just theoretical; it was the spark that ignited the Digital Technologies for Sustainability workshop.

The big question: What’s stopping us?

The session kicked off with a challenge. Moderator Josipa Arapović (Project Manager at F6S) led an interactive exercise, forcing participants to confront the barriers standing between high-tech ambition and green reality.

Whether it’s a lack of specialised talent, the high cost of implementation, or the complexity of data, the consensus was clear: SMEs need a roadmap.

A synergy of innovation

AID4SME shared the stage with five other pioneering European projects—ROB4GREENFORTISUltreia_SudoeTWAIN, and Multifutures. Together, they painted a vivid picture of the future, showcasing how:

  • Artificial Intelligence can optimise resource consumption.
  • Robotics can minimise industrial waste.
  • Data-driven policy can turn abstract Green Deal goals into actionable realities.

Marcel Egger, Project Coordinator for EU-funded projects at i2m, took the floor to represent AID4SME. He detailed exactly how our project acts as an enabler, providing the tools and frameworks necessary for SMEs to develop AI and data solutions in sectors where the environmental stakes are highest:

We support SMEs to develop AI and data-driven solutions for large-scale resource optimisation with real Green Deal impact.”

More than just a presentation: Building a community

The impact of the summit went far beyond the podium. During the Q&A and networking sessions, the conversation shifted toward long-term support.

AID4SME highlighted its Community of Practice, a dedicated ecosystem where funded SMEs aren’t just given a grant and left to their own devices. Instead, they receive continuous mentorship and collaborative support to ensure their AI solutions are successfully implemented and scalable.

Looking ahead

The collaboration didn’t stop when the workshop ended. Throughout the summit, AID4SME maintained a strong presence at the F6S booth, engaging with innovators, policymakers, and tech enthusiasts.

As the Digital Transformation Summit concluded, one thing was certain: the path to a sustainable Europe is digital, and through AID4SME, that path is becoming more accessible for small and medium enterprises every day.
